When I was five, I made my first entree into the Wedding World - a Wedding dress for my doll on a little red toy sewing machine. Little did I know where this would lead some 40 years on. I still have the doll, the dress and a Wedding Cake business - Poshcakes.
I have always had a love for Art, Food and Fashion, wanting to study Fashion, but instead the road lead me to Food and Catering College. Food or Fashion? Fashion was winning again! I started a small business from home, designing and making Evening, Ball and Wedding Gowns for the London & Cambridge scene, So much fun, always a joy, everyone so happy, always different and a great showground!
We moved to the USA, Washing D.C. and became part of the crazy media, entertaining world This is where I discovered food again and especially cakes in all sizes and guises Anything was possible; after all, this was America - bigger and crazier than I had ever seen. Humongous, OTT, lushly frosted cakes screaming party and fun, decorated with M & M's, bows, stars, Harley Davidson Motor Bikes wrapped in shimmering cellophane and served on silver trays - Cakes with foo foo' s Luscious Lemon, Death by Chocolate, Mississippi Mud Pie, Layer Cakes with gooey frosting ... the world was my Cake - I was totally hooked.
We moved from the USA to Devon, where the Wedding scene was virtually nil, everyone gravitating to London (Devon was not in!) unlike today. So I packed up dreams of gowns and cakes, looking after my husband and three daughters - wonderful family life. Never far from the world of Art, I eventually enrolled at Art School to study Ceramics, Glass and Sculpture, still making cakes at every opportunity for fun.
In 2001, I needed to earn a living and a friend suggested I actually sold the cakes I kept giving away - so "Poshcakes" was born. I was asked to donate a cake for a Charity Raffle at Thurlestone Hotel, which lead to a Ruby Wedding cake and my first proper commission to create "The Sandcastle Wedding cake", in a field, by the beach at Bigbury-on-Sea; featured in Cosmopolitan Bride via Photographer Janine Hall- what luck and a big thank you to Sara & Dom for having faith in me. What a challenge - 50 individual 6" Vanilla Sponges oozing raspberry jam and butter-cream in the shape of Sandcastles , piled high with fresh flowers and handmade chocolates - stunning to look at and yummy to eat.
Some of my more challenging Cakes have included a chocolate cake in the Adam Room at Lloyd's London, topped with a working model of the Lutine Bell, where Brokers ate Rolls of Money (heat imaged onto sheets of icing) with their cake! Just recently I designed a giant cake for a Marie Antoinette style wedding, at the old Naval House in Plymouth, crimson and gold with hand-painted butterflies and flowers - the whole wedding theme/floristry was based on my working drawings with the client.
Of course, there are disasters; ovens not reaching the correct temperature, cakes sinking, flavours not working, freezers breaking down and, of course, " the Squirrel that ate my fruit cake" (I forgot to cover it).
I treat each commission very personally, like a work of Art, from the first client meeting to the final delivery and set up - a partnership between myself and the client.
I start by inviting the Bride and Groom to my design studio at home in the beautiful Devon countryside, where we have tea and taste wonderful, yummy cakes (delicious chocolate, luscious lemon, vanilla sponge, moist carrot cake, boozy fruit cake). We exchange ideas, colours, photos, inspirations, play with cake tins - of all shapes and Sizes.
I draw pictures as we go and create an individual, bespoke design to suit the couple, complementing the dress, flowers and colours - giving them "a cake of their dreams" (often totally unlike their original ideas).
I recently hand-painted the story of a 1920's Art Nouveau wedding - from the proposal to the Bride arriving on a jewelled peacock.
My clients come by personal recommendation, hotels, florists and wedding fares, and have included Lloyd's of London, TV companies and many wonderful clients from the media and celebrity world. My cakes travel all over the South West and London and my furthest was driven to Cannes in the South of France.
I am hoping to expand my portfolio to include hand painted watercolours of wedding cakes.
I continue to take my inspiration from my love of art, drawing and painting, three daughters in the art world and my wonderful clients.
